The World’s Largest Chicken-Shaped Building: A Quirky Landmark in the Philippines

A Rooster Hotel with a Legacy

Travelers seeking a unique experience in the Philippines can now book a stay in the world’s largest chicken-shaped building, a striking landmark perched in the highlands of Negros Occidental. This towering six-story structure, which stands at an impressive 35 meters (114 feet) tall, offers 15 air-conditioned rooms that promise comfort and a touch of the whimsical. While the rooms don’t have windows—preserving the building’s feathery façade—they are fully equipped for a cozy stay. Located at Campuestohan Highland Resort, this building recently earned a Guinness World Record title as the largest chicken-shaped structure, and it’s already becoming a must-see attraction for visitors.

The brainchild behind this ambitious project is Ricardo Cano Gwapo Tan, a former local politician in his seventies, who wanted to leave behind a “big legacy” in the world. Tan, who refers to himself as a “big kid at heart,” sees the resort as his personal playground, a place to create something with a lasting “wow factor.” With this monumental chicken-shaped building, Tan not only aimed to create an iconic structure but also to honor the local game fowl industry, which plays a significant role in the lives of many people in the region.

A Tribute to Cockfighting Culture

The chicken-shaped hotel is more than just an eccentric design—it’s a tribute to the game fowl industry, a billion-peso empire in Negros Occidental. Cockfighting, locally known as “sabong,” is deeply embedded in Filipino culture, dating back to per-colonial times. Although controversial and banned in some countries, cockfighting remains a popular and profitable tradition in the Philippines. Negros Occidental is home to over 2,000 game fowl breeding farms, making it one of the key regions for this industry. Tan’s chicken-shaped building serves as a testament to the importance of this practice and its economic impact on the local community.

Chickens, Tan says, are “calm yet commanding creatures,” and have long been a symbol in Filipino life. As a child, Tan fondly remembers the sound of roosters at Christmas, a reminder for families to attend Misa de Gallo, a series of dawn masses leading up to Christmas. For Tan, the chicken is a symbol of both tradition and resilience—values he hopes to celebrate through his whimsical resort.

A One-of-a-Kind Stay in the Sky

Campuestohan Highland Resort, with its new chicken-shaped hotel, has become a beloved destination, especially as the holiday season approaches. Families are flocking to the resort, with the rooster-shaped hotel fully booked through January 2025. Room rates start at just under $80 for four people, and larger groups of up to seven can stay for about $120 per night. The resort, which spans five hectares of scenic land, offers more than just the unique hotel; it features wave pools, a restaurant, a café, and even a collection of cartoon statues and dinosaur replicas to entertain guests of all ages.

While the journey to the resort requires some effort—travelers must take a flight to Bacolod-Silay International Airport followed by a 17-mile drive and an uphill ascent—the experience of staying in the world’s largest chicken-shaped building is undoubtedly worth it. The mountain-top location offers breathtaking views, making it a memorable getaway for those seeking both adventure and a touch of humor in the Philippines’ highlands.

A Quirky Legacy

For Tan, the chicken-shaped building isn’t just about creating a quirky landmark; it’s about leaving a lasting legacy that honors the region’s heritage and the game fowl industry that has supported thousands of livelihoods. The building stands as a tribute to both the history and the future of this unique cultural practice, while offering visitors a playful and memorable experience. As the resort continues to grow, the giant chicken will remain a symbol of pride for Negros Occidental and a must-see for travelers looking to experience the Philippines in a fun and unexpected way.
